Not only traveling is one of the best ways to have fun and get to know more about yourself, but it is also an opportunity to test your English skills.

Wherever we go, besides savouring the countless pleasures of enjoying the nature, the food and the landscape of a different “unknown” country, traveling is mostly about building bridges with new people and making friends. Nowadays one of the best ways to speak to that new friend you’ve just met at the hostel room, or in the line for the next bus in a foreign country, is surely through English.

So, let’s take a look at some useful phrasal verbs (verb+ preposition) that will certainly help you out when you wander around on your next trip:

Set off = start a journey.

They set off to L.A. on the 23th of July.

Take off = when an airplane departs or leaves the ground.

The plane is going to take off on time.

Check in = when you arrive and register at a hotel or airport.

Guests must check in any time before midnight.

Check out = when you pay your bills and leave the hotel.

I need to check out before 2 pm so I will have time to catch the next plane.

Look around = to explore the area near you.

We’re gonna spend the day just looking around this amazing town.

Look forward to (+ verb-ing) = when you are excited and waiting for something to happen.

I’m looking forward to traveling next month.

Drop in/ off = when you get in or out of a bus, plane, train etc..

You should drop out at the next stop.

See off = when you go to the airport to see someone leaving.

They went to the airport to see Kate off.

A good way to practice this kind of new vocabulary is writing or speaking your on phrases, and trying to use them next time you speak in English. If you have any questions let me know on the comments.

See you on the next post!
